Saying Good-bye To An Old Friend!

September 11, 2008

Today is a sad day cause I have to say good-bye to my Whoopi girl!

I got Whoopi when she was 10 weeks old back in late 1993, I use to live up in Townsville, top end of Australia. It’s extremely hot up there so Whoopi’s favourite place was under the house. She would come out to welcome me home which was adorable of her, she’s always had such a beautiful temprament about her :)

Early 1994 Whoopi and I travelled back down to Melbourne, Victoria in my little beat up Datsun 120y. Long trip for a little car so we stopped at a place called Rockhampton just north of Brisbane, we stayed there in a caravan park till we could afford the rest of the trip down.

Melbourne is much cooler in humidity than Townsville which im sure Whoopi enjoyed. We moved back into Dad’s house for a few months then continued down the cost, west of Victoria in place called Torquay, (Surf capital) for Victoria. While there Whoopi had 9 puppies, I think, It was such a long time ago. She would of been close to 1yr old. She was a great mum! Some of my family adopted her puppies so she was in close contact to them right through out her life, her pups have since gone to Doggie Heaven and now comes the time when I will have to say good-bye to her also. The life I have spent with Whoopi is one I will never forget, she’s been my best friend and always will be.

She has become blind and deaf so there’s been no more licks on the nose to me when she hears “love mum!”. She wont eat anymore and drinks very little, I have to help hold her up and guide her outside so it’s inevitable the time has come that we have to make that last trip to the vets :(

All though it’s sad to say good-bye it’s also sad to see her this way. She has given me a time in my life that I will always cherrish. I have 45mins till I have to take her so I just wanted tell you all a little bit about the best companion that has touched my heart and I will miss her dearly!

Thanks for reading

Anne.

What To Do When Your Cat Has A Litter!

August 31, 2008

The first few days of a litter’s life is vital, your mother cat
will spend most of her time nursing the kittens. This is a
natural instinct. Make sure that food and water are very
close to where the kittens are so that the mother does not have
to move far to find nourishment. Monitor the mother cat a few times
a day to make sure that she is producing milk properly. You can tell
if something is wrong if she doesn’t stay with the kittens much
First-time mothers are especially prone to bouts of anxiousness.
Sometimes if the mother cat is worried about her kittens, she may
move them to hide them form everyone and everything, even you. Its
Important to keep the area safe and free from as much distraction as
possible because If she feels very threatened, she may kill her kittens
as a form of protecting them. If you see your mother cat exhibiting
anxious qualities, monitor her activity with the kittens closely
and consider keeping her caged.

Sometimes the mother cat wont stay with the kittens and if this
happens you need to step in, make sure that she is losing
interest first so as you don’t make her feel threatened. You will
need to keep the Kittens at a very warm temperature to survive.
you may need to supply heat from an outside source, like a heat lamp or
a hot water bottle, wrap it up in a towel so as they aren’t directally
on it. Large litters will typically stay warmer, using body heat. Make
sure that the temperature is kept at about 85-90 degrees Fahrenheit for
at least the first week of life. The mother cat will still look after her
litter but you do need to keep an eye on the litter for herif she strays
away too much. She may feel as through their are in danger if
there is too much light. You can calm an anxious mother by placing a
blanket loosely over the top of the box.

If you have any concerns you should speak to your local vets :)

Ever Heard The Phrase: A Dog Is For Life Not Just For Christmas!

July 18, 2008

We all love puppies, they are so cute and adorable :) . I think the main problem that people have when buying a puppy for Christmas is they don’t really look into the full details it takes of owning a dog. We all get purchase happy around Christmas and who could resist a cute little puppy.

Knowing just a few simple commands such as sit, stay, fetch, heal & lay down or anything else that you would like your puppy to learn can help you want to keep your puppy for life and not just for Christmas. A well behaved dog in its older years is just as much a joy to have around as it is a young pup.

Happy puppy loving to you all :)

AGGRESSION IN DOGS!

June 22, 2008

Aggressive dogs are so misunderstood. Sure there
are dog breeds out there like Rottweilers, Boxers,
Bulldogs, German Shepherds, Old English Sheep dogs,
these are just to name a few.  These dogs can be
great companions if trained properly.

What people misunderstand is that all though
training is essential if your going to own a dog,
you don’t have to train it to be aggressive.

Dogs naturally protect their territory and their
owner so understanding about the breeds and the
different levels of aggression is important!

Knowing how to control and tame the more
aggressive dog is just learning how to make your
dog understand who is boss. You are the leader
and since dogs are a pack animal making sure your
dog understands it’s place in the chain is an
important step so you stay in control.
